Flaminio – Parioli
Amongst the first quarters of Rome, the Flaminio ( so called because of the homonym road ) was born in 1911 together with other 14 districts; it is placed near the Mura Aureliane and to the Tiber River, and borders on the Quartiere Della Vittoria, on Parioli, on the Pincianoand on Campo Marzio.
Thanks to the hotels of Flaminio quarter, it is possible to visit the various tourist attraction of the area, that configured during the years as a full-blown cultural case thaks to many theatres, museums and polyfunctional centres ( like the Auditorium ), being considered one of the most chic and intellectual area of the Capital.
The area begun to develop in the end of XIXth century, when the Società Automobili Roma identified the suitable zone to build its establishments in the curve of the Tiber; until then, the Flaminia road ran undisturbed on a level land bordered with fields, until Ponte Milvio, and periodically was flooded by the river.
While the industrial implant growed, between the river and the valley under Parioli the number of settlement increased, and in this period rose first building complexes and the road network. In 1911, thanks to the International Exhibition, the area defines its features as a cultural and sporting polo: here are built the Stadio Nazionale, the Ippodromo dei Parioli, different exhibition seats of Valle Giulia, together with Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna.
After second World War, with the allocation in Rome of the Olympic Games of 1960, it opens another period of transformation of the urban area: the building of the Villaggio Olimpico ( with its Palazzetto dello Sport and the Stadio Flaminio ) and of the seats of the Sport Federations reappoint the sport vocation of the district.
With the competition in 1994 for a new Auditorium the quarter, characterized now by a clear architectural language and by contemporary shapes, face a new step of requalification.
Staying in one of the hotels of the area, it will be possible to admire large buildings as the one of Ministry Navy, but also squares ( as Piazza Mancini ) and large Square ( as Piazzale Flaminio ), but also Porta Del Popolo and the Teatro Olimpico, the Scalo De Pinedo and the Stadio Flaminio, the Circoli di Canottaggio on Tiber and the bridge Duca D’Aosta, the churches of Santa Croce and Sant’Andrea ( both the one of Flaminia road and the one in Ponte Milvio ).
In 1911, 15 districts were born in Rome, amongst them the Parioli one ( that came its denomination from “Monti Parioli”, hills that in turns maybe derives its name from the word peraioli, because of the pear trees that grew up on the mount ).
The quarter ( completed more or less in the fifthies ), that borders on Tor di Quinto and the area of Val Melaina, the Trieste district, the Salario one, the Pinciano and the Flaminio, is built as an area dedicated to the upper class, and is mainly used by hierarch of the fascist regime and by the public servants.
Nowadays it is still thought as one of the most elengant and chic district of rome: the stereotype of the well off young, with a mid-high level way of life, with expensive dresses and using pricey things, belongs completely to this area, so much that also a person with that way of life, also if living in another district, is called “pariolino” (from Parioli).
In the zone there are many squares and famous roads, like Viale Parioli, that from Piazza Ungheria winds until Villa Glori and Acqua Acetosa, Piazza delle Muse ( from where is possible to enjoy a wonderful panorama on the north outskirts of Rome ), Via dei Monti Parioli, with its elegant buildings were died in 1967 the Prince Antonio De Curtis ( better known as “Totò” ), as well as Piazza Euclide, considered as the centre of the district ( also if not physically ).
In the area there are also many sport implants ( like Stadio Flaminio ), also considering the fact that between Villa Glori Park and Via Flaminia have been built the Villaggio Olimpico(Olympic Village).
After that, if you choose to spend a few days in Rome, it is possible to stay in hotels in Parioli, to visity tourist and artistic beauties like the Grande Moschea di Roma (Big Mosque of Rome), or the churches of San Luigi Gonzaga, San Valentino and San Roberto Bellarmino, as well as the Forte Antenne.
In the area there is also the famous Auditorium Parco della Musica, and the wonderful villas of Villa Ada, Villa Glori and Villa Grazioli, with its marvellous parks.
